Will you teach more than one person in a private session?
I will accept requests to teach 2 students at the same time. There is still the opportunity for personal tailoring when I am monitoring and teaching two students, working together, in the same session. This scenario will only be allowed if both students are interested in working with each other, and are in agreement.
What is your primary method of training?
Once a basic understanding of principles and techniques has been established, the primary tool is what we call Look Sau (a form of Chi Sau). It is similar to sparring but it's speed and intensity can be adjusted to match the abilities of the student. (With a total novice it is "One Step." We pair off and one partner executes an attack. The attack freezes at completion, and the "defender" then has as much time as needed to decide on and execute the appropriate response and counter attack. We trade back and forth in this manner, without resetting to a starting position. This creates a much more dynamic system than a series of simple, repetitive drills.) The more advanced the student becomes the more the speed and energy is increased. At the advanced levels, an outside observer will think we are "trying to kill each other," and it looks like hard sparring rather than the drill that it actually is. Do I teach forms? Yes. Do I teach certain drills? Yes. Is there wooden dummy work involved? Yes. However, the primary tool is this from of dynamic, controlled "sparring". Think of it as three dimensional chess. It will teach you how to maintain proper structure while solving problems in real time, and remaining aware of your environment.
Do I need protective gear or special clothing?
No special gear is required. I recommend the use of a mouth guard, groin protection, and eye protection. Heavy pads and gloves are not allowed. I prefer you train in the clothing you wear on an everyday basis. The fight isn't going to wait for you to change into your kung fu slippers.
Will you spar/cross-train with me?
I am happy to touch hands with anyone from any art. (Trained or untrained does not matter.) I don't charge a fee for this, but be aware that I also do not teach during these sparring sessions.
How long is a "session"?
A session is supposed to be one hour long, however this is not absolute, and an average session tends to be an hour and fifteen minutes.
Will you come to my location?
Yes, I will conduct sessions at a location of your choice. If my travel distance merits compensation, an additional fee may be required.
